Tribute
to President Reagan
>> Brandenburg Gate gathering recalls
courage and leadership
BERLIN, Republicans
Abroad conducted a sunset memorial service for President Ronald Reagan on Friday
June 11. During the gathering near the Brandenburg Gate, Berliners
recalled the courage, resolve and genuine friendship personified by the late
president.
The service, conducted by US Air Force Reserve Chaplain Thomas Obersat, was
bittersweet, as much a celebration of a remarkable life as it was an occasion
for mourning.
"We remember a man as well as a leader, someone whose presence provided
comfort and confidence to a troubled world." Obersat stated as he recounted
President Reagan's humble beginnings as a source of his faith and devotion.
Those attending the somber event recounted the inspiration and hope offered by
the President during one of the most challenging periods of our shared
history. As a symbol of President Reagan's resolve to 'Open this
gate!' mourners left roses at the future site of the new US Embassy
located in what was the Soviet sector of Berlin.
"He made me proud to call myself American." stated a tearful Ingrid
Lambeth, a naturalized US citizen of German decent.
"History will immortalize this great Republican leader by recognizing his
convictions and courage to act upon them. For those who lived during his
presidency he will be remembered for his remarkable ability to communicate,
providing a nation and the world with the confidence needed to overcome
monumental challenges." stated Republicans Abroad Germany Chairman Henry
Nickel. "From eastern Europe to southern California, we remember a
man whose wit, charm, humor and genuine friendship helped to bring the world
closer together and an end to the Cold War. For this we fondly remember and thank him."
In addition to the service, the US Embassy in Berlin provided a book of
condolence for members of the public to express their thoughts and
sympathies. Under a rain-soaked canopy in Berlin Mitte, an American guard
watched over pages upon pages of thoughts, recollections and thanks to a man who
will forever be remembered as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century
and our nation.
Plans are currently underway to establish a lasting tribute in Berlin to
President Reagan and those leaders who personified an enduring transatlantic
friendship and commitment to freedom. Those wishing to participate in this
project should contact Henry Nickel at +49 (0)173 107 7632.
